NASS 2016: Spotlight on Robotics

Surgical Robot

This year’s meeting introduced 19 new-to-market products, highlighted by three robotics systems designed to improve surgical precision.

From the exhibit hall to educational break-out sessions, surgical guidance systems were front and center at the 2016 North American Spine Society (NASS) annual meeting held Oct. 26-29 in Boston, Massachusetts.  Simply keeping up with all happenings in this burgeoning technology sector can be a challenging, so here’s a recap of the major players to keep on your radar.

Mazor Robotics (Caesarea, Israel)
In May 2016, Mazor announced a strategic partnership with Medtronic. Two months later it unveiled the Mazor X, its next-generation system that builds on the company’s existing robotic guidance technology.  Mazor says the product increases the accuracy of pedicle screw placement, thereby lowering clinical complication rates, pain, and exposure to fluoroscopy—plus usage can be quickly mastered.

Globus Medical (Audubon, Pennsylvania)
Globus, which acquired Excelsius Surgical two years ago, presented its investigational robotics system Excelsius at NASS 2016. The technology is expected to be approved in 2017, with the company generating revenues by the latter half of the year. The Excelsius robot is designed to facilitate surgical access, implant sizing, positioning and placement, in addition to decreasing procedure time. Its features include non-patient bedside docking and an optical tracking system.

DePuy Synthes (Raynham, Massachusetts)
DePuy Synthes showcased its Kick system, which was developed with Germany-based BrainLab. The system includes FluoroExpress Software, and intended to offer real-time, intraoperative optics of instruments and implants in relation to patient anatomy. It is lightweight, compact and portable.

In all, 19 new products launched at this NASS 2016. Here’s a quick reference guide to the market newcomers:
