From the Desk of the CMO

“I know it when I see it,” was Chief Justice Potter Stewart’s infamous attempt to define obscenity in a 1964 court case. He acknowledged that a specific, legal or intelligible definition was difficult to describe. Similarly, healthcare innovation can be nebulous and often left to be defined by those other than the end-user or consumer of related care. Advancements are seen as novel simply if they are different—incremental to that which is currently done.

Innovation in healthcare has typically centered on the development and implementation of ideas, technologies and processes that aim to prioritize platforms over providers, automation over autonomy and efficiency over ease. While many of these strategies have created change, they have not resulted in sustainable improvements to outcomes, quality or cost.

It seems real improvement is often limited by an underestimation of healthcare’s powerful undercurrents—stifling regulations, financial constraints and gaps in both technology and data.

“Every decision we make is based on member input & rooted in a deep understanding of both clinical considerations & operational environment of use.”

Successful innovation must solve for the practical and, most importantly, be understood before it can be embraced. Ultimately, innovation is the creation of change that focuses on clinical outcomes and patient experience—and one that reduces the total cost of care.

The team at HealthTrust deeply understands the translation of innovation from product to portfolio, and from portfolio to provider. I like to say that our north star is the amalgam of quality, safety, outcomes and cost. Our touchstone is comparative effectiveness. This means that every decision we make is based on member input and rooted in a deep understanding of both clinical considerations and the operational environment of use.

A focus on achieving improved clinical outcomes is the genesis behind the launch of HealthTrust Performance Solutions, with the end goal of accelerating the value of a provider’s group purchasing membership. As operators and business advisors supported by our proprietary tech stack, Signal (learn more in Meet Signal), our team delivers solutions that proactively align clinical and financial goals to protect margin. Through our experience, technology and insights, we apply a systemwide approach to solve the challenges that matter most and a focus on those that deliver measurable impact. We stand ready to do that for you.
