HCA Healthcare Now Accepting Submissions for a Special Issue on NSIs

The HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine is accepting submissions through May 1 for an upcoming special issue focused on nursing-sensitive indicators (NSIs).

Editorials, brief reports, case studies/series, research studies, quality improvement (QI) projects, and evidence-based practice (EBP) projects which focus on the following NSIs can be submitted:

  • Falls with/without injuries
  • Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs)
  • Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs)
  • Ventilator-associated events (VAEs)
  • Non-ventilator associated hospital acquired pneumonia (NVHAP), and
  • Use of restraints/seclusion in the behavioral health setting.

In particular, the journal is seeking NSI-focused articles exploring:

  • Impact of innovative nursing care models
  • Superiority of specific care models, practices, bundles, or approaches for preventing, identifying, or managing specific NSIs
  • Strategies for hard-wiring clinical excellence (especially those designed to bolster care systems against pressure)
  • Research capturing the specific role that diversity, equity, and inequality have on NSIs, and
  • Use of technology/artificial intelligence by nurses to reduce NSIs

Who can submit? This opportunity is open to all HealthTrust members, not just those who work for HCA Healthcare and/or its affiliates. Preventing and managing negative outcomes from nursing-sensitive indicators is a team effort, so submissions from interprofessional/multidisciplinary teams are welcome as long as they are aligned with the focus and themes of the special issue.

Benefits of having your work published in HCA Healthcare’s journal:

  • Helping build and influence the science in your topic area
  • Receiving validation that your outcomes were rigorous enough to meet the standards for peer-review
  • Allowing others in the field to respond to the work
  • Feeling of accomplishment for having your work published in a PubMed-indexed, peer-reviewed scientific journal
  • Providing motivation for your teams to keep driving forward

More information can be found on the official call for papers.

Submission deadline: May 1, 2024. See the Author Guidelines to ensure submissions meet the journal’s standards.

Authors are also encouraged to review the EQUATOR Network guidelines for their respective submission type(s) prior to submitting. Questions and pre-submission inquiries can be sent to Managing Editor, Graig Donini at HCA Healthcare.

Guest Editor Opportunity

The journal team is also looking for Guest Editors* to help it build the special issue, and:

  • Act as gatekeepers by releasing submitted content for peer review or rejecting the content prior to peer review.
  • Request peer reviews from potential reviewers and then assess the reviews and provide guidance to the authors on producing a manuscript suitable for publication.
  • Use the tools provided by the journal to request reviews and submit decisions to authors.
  • Provide peer review candidates and request submissions for the special issue from their colleagues.
  • Submit your own content, including non-peer review content, such as editorials or other short articles.
  • Meet periodically to assess the direction of the issue.
  • Act as an ambassador for the publication when among colleagues or at conferences and other professional meetings.

*As a PubMed-indexed, peer-reviewed scientific journal, HCA Healthcare routinely reviews content and considers editorial assistance from anyone with the proper training/experience. You do not have to be an HCA Healthcare affiliated employee; anyone with the proper training/experience can express their interest in serving in the guest editor capacity.
