HealthTrust’s Corporate Pharmacy Leadership Residency Program Approved for ASHP Accreditation

PGY-2 residency is first ever to be offered by a GPO

BRENTWOOD, Tennessee—May 9, 2016—HealthTrustSM announces that its postgraduate year two (PGY-2) Corporate Pharmacy Leadership Residency Program was recently granted approval for accreditation by the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP). Accreditation signifies that the specialized post-graduate training program has met the ASHP’s stringent quality standards, enabling it to attract the highest caliber of residents.

The ASHP Commission on Credentialing arrived at its decision based in part on findings from an on-site visit last fall that included interviews with Chief Executive Officer Ed Jones, Chief Operating Officer Michael Berryhill, Chief Medical Officer Michael Schlosser, M.D., and Senior Vice President of Strategic Sourcing Jocelyn Bradshaw. The process also included surveyors’ review of a self-assessment questionnaire regarding HealthTrust’s compliance to ASHP residency accreditation standards.

Accreditation was granted for three years, through 2019, during which time HealthTrust is required by ASHP to show proof of continuous improvement of the residency program. At the end of that term, the program must be re-surveyed to maintain its accreditation status.

The PGY-2 residency program is co-sponsored by the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy and is designed to prepare pharmacy residents for pharmacy leadership within a healthcare organization. It is the nation’s first corporate GPO-based residency training program for up-and-coming pharmacy leaders.

“The only way to truly understand how pharmacy sourcing and strategic business decisions are reached is to spend time working in a corporate healthcare environment,” says Marcus Dortch, PharmD, director of HealthTrust’s Clinical Pharmacy Services as well as the two-year-old residency program. “The pharmacy profession has been short on qualified business leaders for some time now, largely because training of this type has been non-existent. We’re hopeful our residency program will inspire others like it—helping to ensure that academia, healthcare and business actively collaborate to prepare the next generation of qualified pharmacy leaders.”
